I had meant to enter this in the "why I started writing" contest, but again, my military life someone detered me from finishing writing this memoir. I am still going to post it for myself because as a middle aged woman who started writing later in my life, I am going to live by Dara Torres quote "Don't ever let age keep you from living your dream" and writing is my dream. I began to write because of a man named ironically, Manny. He was not any ordinary man because he was in the military and I had an affair with him that lasted almost 10 years and now my military career has lasted almost 20 years. From the moment he touched me, electricity flowed through me like the words that form whenever my fingers touch the keyboard. He was the reason I joined the military and also the reason, I knew that I had to go to college in order to learn that there is more to life than a man.

"My Writing Life" entry - CZ is a real live person, an author, former VP/Editor at a major publishing house, and now an Editor Emerita. I can not reveal her full name, given the HIPAA regulations that govern our fair land - protecting the medical privacy of private and government agency clients being the grand idea. Other than her initials, this creative non-fiction tale is essentially how I stumbled into "My Writing Life." Enjoy.

My Writing Life contest entry re-edited/re-posted: The general consensus from the reviewers was that they wanted a bit more at the end to bring the reader up to date as to my writing life now. Everything else is the same, except the last writing 'snippit' from the script, which hopefully brings them to where they wanted to be. Is this better?

This is the true story of how it all began. A few names have been changed to protect the innocent. And, thank you, Ray... I know you're still up there (with Hap now by your side, again), smiling and quoting... "The boy stood on the burning deck..." <> ****** Some of you have commented on the "numbers." I looked up the rule and here is what I found: Rule 1. Some authorities say that the numbers one through nine or ten should be spelled out and figures used for higher numbers. Other authorities spell out one through one hundred, plus even hundreds, thousands, and so on. The best strategy is to be consistent. Correct Examples: I want five copies, not ten copies. I want 5 copies, not 10 copies. Rule 2. Be consistent within a category. For example, if you choose numerals because one of the numbers you must deal with is greater than ten, you should use numerals for everything in that category. If you use numbers in different categories, use figures for one category and words for the other. Correct Examples: Given the budget constraints, if all 30 history students attend the four plays, then the 7 math students will be able to attend only two plays.(Students are represented with figures; plays are represented with words.) My 10 cats fought with their 2 cats. My ten cats fought with their two cats. Thank you, again, for your time. I hope this offers some clarification as to why I chose to use numerical figures. =)

It all began innocently enough. Without much effort I prepared my graduation speech, writing my own commencement address. My counselor made one minor correction, and I was off and running! Or so I thought. But my defining moment came many years later after I beat myself up time and time again over a major mistake I made in my forty-eighth year.
